Why Treatment Matters
The Real Impact of Untreated Sleep Apnoea
When you stop breathing during the night, your brain has to wake you up just enough to restart breathing. This happens over and over, putting tremendous strain on your heart and other organs.
CPAP Treatment Changes Everything
- Your airways stay open all night
- You sleep deeply without interruption
- Your oxygen levels remain stable
- Your heart doesn't have to work as hard
- You wake up truly rested
Important to Know
CPAP doesn't cure sleep apnoea - it manages it very effectively. You'll need to use it every night to maintain the benefits. But most people find it becomes as routine as brushing their teeth

Frequently Asked Questions
What is CPAP and how does it work?
CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. It's simpler than itsounds - a small, quiet machine delivers gentle air pressure through a comfortable mask to keep your airways open while you sleep. Think of it like this: sleep apnoea happens when your throat muscles relax too much and block your airway. CPAP provides just enough gentle air pressure to keep that airway open, so you can breathe normally all night long. Modern CPAP machines are nothing like the old ones:
- Whisper quiet (quieter than most bedside fans)
- Compact and lightweight
- Built-in humidifiers for comfort
- Smart features that adjust automatically
CPAP vs APAP - What's the difference?
CPAP delivers one steady pressure all night. APAP (Automatic PAP) adjusts the pressure automatically based on your needs throughout the night. Most people find APAP more comfortable because it only delivers as much pressure as you need at any given moment.
What about the mask?
This is where many people have concerns, but modern masks are designed for comfort. We have a full range of the latest, lightest masks available and we'll work with you to find one that fits perfectly and feels comfortable. A proper mask fit is crucial - it should seal well without being tight or uncomfortable. Our experienced sleep technicians are experts at mask fitting and will make sure you're comfortable with your equipment.
I’m a pensioner and can’t afford a CPAP machine. What are my options?
The NSW Government offers a program to support pensioners and individuals on fixed incomes in obtaining a CPAP machine for a nominal annual fee. While the contribution to ENABLE NSW is only $100 per year, please note that additional costs may be incurred during the application process. Additionally, the processing and delivery of the CPAP machine may take approximately 3 to 5 months.
I’ve been diagnosed with Moderate OSA. Am I eligible to apply through ENABLE NSW?
ENABLE NSW typically only provides CPAP machines to patients diagnosed with Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). However, if you have Complex Moderate OSA accompanied by other significant health conditions, you may be eligible. An assessment by a sleep physician is required to determine whether you meet the criteria.
Does ENABLE NSW provide a mask along with the CPAP machine?
No. Masks are not included with the CPAP machine and must be purchased separately. The cost of a mask can be up to $285.
Can I request an APAP machine instead of a CPAP machine?
No. ENABLE NSW only supplies Fixed Pressure CPAP machines. APAP machines are not available through the program. For more information, please refer to the ENABLE NSW Process PDF.
