The History of Home Sleep Study
Frequently Asked Questions
What is involved in a home sleep study?
A home sleep study, also called Home Sleep Apnea Testing (HSAT), involves wearing a small monitoring device while you sleep in your own bed. It records data like breathing rate, oxygen levels, and movement. The device is returned the next day, and your data is reviewed by a sleep physician. Home studies are best suited for diagnosing obstructive sleep apnoea and are typically more accessible than in-hospital sleep studies.
How do I know if I need a sleep study?
If you're experiencing loud snoring, frequent waking, excessive daytime sleepiness, headaches in the morning, or trouble concentrating, a sleep study may be recommended. These symptoms can indicate sleep apnoea or other sleep disturbances that can be confirmed through clinical testing. Consulting a sleep clinic is the first step in determining whether a study is appropriate.
What happens after I receive my sleep study results?
Once your results are reviewed, a sleep physician will interpret the findings and determine whether a diagnosis such as sleep apnoea or another sleep disorder is present. Based on the diagnosis, you’ll be given a personalised treatment plan. This might include CPAP therapy, lifestyle adjustments, or cognitive therapy. You’ll also be offered support to help you adjust to any prescribed treatment.
